At about six I could tell it was time to leave, and I said I would be on my way.
âWhere are you going?â asked Sophie.
âJust back east. Home.â
âAre you going out?â
âNot planning to.â
âHmm. Walk me to the Tube, will you?â
âOf course.â
âActually, Sophie, we did want to talk to you about something first,â said Andrew. He looked at me and round towards the door.
âWell, can Paul stay while you do?â she said.
âUm,â said Andrew. âI suppose it doesnât matter.â
âAnd actually thereâre some books I wanted to borrow â can I take them?â Sophie said, leaving the room and pacing up and down the hallway.
âYes, just show them to me first in case I need them for a course or a piece.â
Emily stood up. She ran a sink full of water and started putting pans into it.
âIâll do that later, darling,â said Andrew.
âDo you want me to wait in your living room?â I asked. âWhile you talk about whatever youâre talking about.â
âNo, stay,â said Andrew. âRight, Emily?â
âYeah, why not?â she said, sitting down again, before getting back up and putting the kettle on.
We sat there waiting for Sophie, whose company I was beginning to look forward to having to myself. I was curious about the type of alliance we were going to form.
âSo what was this thing you wanted to tell me?â she asked when she came back in with a pile of books, and her bag on her shoulder.
âSit down, Sophie,â said Andrew.
âIâll hear you whether Iâm standing up or sitting down,â she said, leaning against the kitchen counter.
âFine. Iâve asked Emily toââ
âThis is the best translation, isnât it?â said Sophie, holding up a book.
âIâve asked Emily toââ
âWeâve decided together to,â said Emily.
âYes, weâve decided together to⦠that weâd like to get married.â
âOh,â said Sophie.
No one had looked at me once during this exchange except Sophie, a quick glance of panic. I didnât say congratulations or anything at all.
Sophie coughed. âJust to be clear: you are going to get married? When?â
âWe wonât wait long,â said Andrew. âThe end of the summer, perhaps early September.â
âCongratulations,â I said, to break the silence.
The engaged couple looked in my direction and smiled with their mouths shut. While they were looking away from her, Sophie pretended to vomit, composed herself and said, âYes, very well done. Now I presume itâs my job to tell Mum about this. Have you thought about Mum at all in this?â
âIâll call her this evening,â said Andrew.
âDonât call her this evening. If you call her this evening Iâll have to go home and pick up the pieces, and I might have other plans this evening.â
âThere wonât be any pieces to pick up, Sophie. Weâve been divorced for eight years.â
âEight years is nothing. Eight years is eight weeks.â
âThatâs startlingly mature and nihilistic of you, Sophie, but in this case eight years is eight years. I do still speak to Jean as you know, and sheâs fully aware of my relationship with Emily.â
âThatâs what you think. You donât live with her.â
âNo. I live with Emily, and I will be marrying her this summer.
